Theatre Green Book Sustainable Buildings case studies
Three case studies have been published demonstrating how the Home Survey Tool can help theatres prioritise sustainability work.
Thanks to funding from the Wolfson Foundation, Buro Happold worked with three different theatres to demonstrate how the Home Survey Tool combined with an engineers’ site visit can identify the most urgent and impactful projects to improve each building’s environmental sustainability.
Developed to accompany the Sustainable Buildings volume of the Theatre Green Book, the Home Survey Tool is a simple building questionnaire that produces a detailed list of prioritised recommendations and suggests whether these improvements are best delivered as immediate ‘quick wins’, as part of routine maintenance, or as part of a major capital project.
The aim of the case study project was to take theatre buildings at different stages in terms of refurbishment and their journey towards sustainability.
The three theatres for the case studies are:
- Salisbury Playhouse
- Trafalgar Theatre, London
- Yvonne Arnaud Theatre, Guildford
Each case study examines the challenges and opportunities for the building based on factors including the building style and design, listed status and location.

The Theatre Green Book is a project spearheaded by Theatres Trust, ABTT and Buro Happold, and coordinated by Renew Culture, which creates easy to follow guidance and a shared industry standard for environmentally responsible theatre.
