Theatre provision in Oldham
Jon Morgan, Director, Theatres Trust comments on the situation in Oldham, following the announcement of the closure of Oldham Coliseum next month:
Oldham Council has expressed its intentions to build a new theatre for Oldham, which Theatres Trust is very supportive of. We supported the earlier iteration of the scheme and we look forward to commenting on the new plans when they become available.
We are in touch with Oldham Council and the project team, offering our expertise to ensure the new building is fit for purpose and provides facilities its local community needs. We have emphasised the necessity of continued theatre provision in Oldham until the new building is ready, so that audiences are not lost in the meantime.
Theatres Trust in our role as the national advisory body for theatres offers free and unbiased advice to any theatre owners or operators with issues relating to their building and its operation. We contacted the management of Oldham Coliseum to offer our support as soon as we became aware that the venue had lost is Arts Council England NPO funding and have reached out to them since its closure was announced.
