Theatres Trust statement on sale of Brighton Hippodrome
Brighton Hippodrome is the finest surviving example of a circus theatre in the country. It is currently on the Trust's Theatres at Risk Register.
We understand that Brighton Hippodrome has been sold to a new owner. Theatres Trust has not been consulted on any changes to the building or its surrounding site at this point but we look forward to hearing the proposals for a future life for this historic theatre. We will consider any developments that the new owner proposes but will not support them if they would preclude future use of the Hippodrome as a lyric theatre. We believe there is demand for large scale plays and musical theatre in Brighton and the Hippodrome is ideally suited to fill this gap in the market. The current state of the building gives us some concern and urgent repairs are required. We hope that the new owners will action these as a priority.
